IIMyC (UNMdP, CONICET) – INIDEP Ichthyological Collection

The main objective of the Ichthyological Collection is the registration and conservation of exclusively marine fish species distributed in the Southwestern Atlantic and adjacent waters. This collection has an important wealth of the region's ichthyofauna, represented by 144 families and 365 species. The deposited material comes from research campaigns as well as from commercial, artisanal and recreational fishing. The samples are stored in 70% alcohol, previously fixed in 10% formalin. The Fish Biology Research Group (IIMyC) is in charge of the curation and administration of the collection. The database of the collection is open for consultation by the entire scientific community and the general public.

Beginnings

The Ichthyological Collection began in 1970, at the former Institute of Marine Biology (IBM), under the direction of Dr. Fernando Cervigón, an eminent Spanish ichthyologist based in Venezuela. After Cervigón's initiation, it was curated by Dr. Berta Cousseau for many years. Currently, the material is physically stored at the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP).

Coverage area

The main area of coverage is the Southwest Atlantic, between 34ºS and 55ºS and adjacent areas, but also contains material from the South Shetland Islands, South Georgia and the Southern Ocean.
