General context

The Institute of Marine and Coastal Research (IIMyC) is a dual dependency institute, between the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP) and the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) under the figure of Executing Unit. It brings together a series of research groups with a consolidated multidisciplinary approach to the generation of knowledge on marine and coastal environments. In particular, it studies the processes and factors that determine the structure and functioning of ecosystems, focusing on marine and coastal environments and their interfaces, as well as their associated ecosystem services. It seeks to provide tools for sustainable management of resources and socio-ecological systems, combining research, human resources training, transfer and difussion.

The IIMyC's strategic plan includes a program that goes beyond its own academic-scientific interests, collaborating with different national (e.g. INIDEP, Federal Fisheries Council, INTA, Chancellery, National Parks Administration, etc.), provincial (Ministries, CIC, etc.) and municipal (Environmental and other Secretariats), and different levels of judicial institutions. This collaboration reinforces and expands existing lines of research, but also promotes the transfer of knowledge to these organizations. This transfer extends to the private sector, meeting specific demands and needs.
In relation to the training of human resources, it provides optimal conditions for the incorporation and training of doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, and collaborates in the generation of a stable offer of graduate courses of academic excellence at the Graduate School of the FCEyN-UNMDP.
