Services of the Laboratorio de Análisis de Isótopos Estables

The Laboratorio de Análisis de Isótopos Estables (LAIE) operates as a service laboratory of the IIMYC (UNMdP-CONICET), providing support to Researchers, CPAs, and Fellows of the Institute, as well as to other academic subunits of the UNMDP, researchers belonging to the public and private scientific system, and external users.

It was created in 2015, as a result of the acquisition of large equipment from the "Programa de Proyectos de Modernización de Equipamiento de Laboratorios de Investigación" (PME-2015) within the framework of the Plan Argentina Innovadora 2020. This equipment is an isotopic ratio determination system by mass spectrometry (IRMS) for D/H, 13C/12C, 15N/14N, 18O/16O, and 34S/32S coupled to different types of injection systems for solid, liquid, and gaseous samples. Its acquisition was carried out by the IIMyC, jointly with researchers from other public institutions dedicated to research in marine and coastal environments, in response to the need for analytical capabilities not available in the country. Its choice was based on common objectives and needs, optimizing the investment of time and resources, also allowing the training of a greater number of human resources for the development of priority lines that need to be implemented or strengthened.

In addition, the LAIE has a microbalance for sample preparation, and a dissolved carbon analyzer acquired by the IIMyC with funding from a PICT-E 2014.

The availability schedule for its use or inquiries is Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, at the UNMDP Annex, located at Juan B. Justo 2550, ground floor.

General description of the equipment

1.- Microbalance: ORION CAHN C-33 - Thermo Electron Corporation, precision of 0.001 mg (up to 200 mg) and basic weighing instruments (tweezers and spatulas).

2.- Total Carbon Analyzer (TOC): TOC-L CSH with ASI-L autosampler Shimadzu

3.- Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) Sercon composed of an IRMS HS2022 module; an isoEArth+ elemental analyzer (with autosampler for solids and gases); a high-temperature elemental analyzer HT-EA Wave (with autosampler for solids); and a Cryo-Prep trace gas injection preconcentrator with PAL autosampler.

Services offered

1.- Sample preparation for Isotopic Ratio and/or elemental analysis. Includes sample weighing and encapsulation in tin capsules (Currently available)

2.- Quantification of Carbon (Organic, Inorganic, and/or Total) in fresh and/or saltwater samples. (Currently available)

3.- Elemental analysis of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen (C, N, S, H, and O) in solid samples, solids dissolved in water, or gaseous samples. (Coming soon).

4.- Analysis of isotopic ratios of Deuterium/Hydrogen (D/H), Oxygen (18O/16O), Carbon (13C/12C), Nitrogen (15N/14N), Sulfur (34S/32S) in solid, gaseous samples, and solids dissolved in water. And elemental analysis of Carbon, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Hydrogen, and Oxygen, solid samples and solids dissolved in water. (Coming soon).
