History

The research group Wetlands and Coastal Environments was created in 2008 (OCA Nro. 1138/08; FCEyN, UNMDP), with the aim of studying the structure and dynamics of the wetlands and coastal environments of the SE Buenos Aires province.

Currently, diverse studies are conducted in association with other research groups from the country and abroad. These studies include addressing the environmental quality of coastal lagoons, Pampas lakes, streams, artificial waterbodies and coastal environments; and studies on the biodiversity, bioacoustics, and ecology of estuaries, wetlands, marshes and intertidals; on the biogeochemical dynamics of nutrients; and on the modification of ecological processes due to global change related factors. Investigations include field samplings, lab analyses, and controlled experiments in the field and laboratory, and are funded through national institutions and international projects. Their results are communicated in meetings and congresses and published in scientific journals.

The experience and knowledge acquired in these research areas are transferred to the society through the active participation in socioenviromental conflicts that arise in different territories linked to the wetlands and coastal environments.
