History

The Research Group Ecology and Conservation of Marine and Coastal Birds was formally established in March 2025 through OCA 54/2025 (Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata). Its formation was the result of an extensive history of research and scientific collaboration among researchers, fellows, and students dedicated to the study of the ecology and conservation of marine and coastal birds.

Over the years, the development of projects in collaboration, the diversification of research lines, and the addition of new researchers and fellows fostered the consolidation of a specialized working team. This growth led to the creation of a research group with a distinct identity, focused on deepening knowledge of the biology, ecology, and conservation of marine and coastal birds, as well as their interactions with human activities and the environments they inhabit.

One of the key characteristics of the research group is its transdisciplinary approach, which integrates knowledge and tools from the biological sciences, sociology, environmental management, and non-formal knowledge. This diversity of disciplines makes it possible to address conservation issues from a comprehensive perspective, considering both ecological processes and the social, economic, and institutional dimensions that influence marine and coastal ecosystems. In this way, the group seeks to generate knowledge that contributes not only to understanding how these systems work, but also to the development of strategies for conservation, stewardship, and environmental management. The group also engages in critical outreach and expert advice to both public and private sectors.
