IIMyC vision
The IIMYC wishes to become a scientific institution of reference on the functioning and dynamics of marine-coastal ecosystems and their interfaces, and under a scenario of environmental changes. To this end, its research focuses on understanding the biological, ecological and environmental processes at different interfaces, including their interaction with the atmosphere. In addition to disciplinary research, it adopts an inter and transdisciplinary approach that favors the transversality of theoretical and observational/experimental approaches, strongly encouraging local, regional and international collaboration. The knowledge generated contributes to the development of other fundamental activities with impact on both academia and ecosystem governance and in the social actors involved. These include:
a- The development of theoretical and conceptual aspects of the scientific disciplines that study the functioning of marine and coastal ecosystems and their interfaces.
b- The training of human resources (preferably interdisciplinary) through the inclusion of fellows and researchers.
c- The transfer to different social, political and economic actors, with special emphasis on the prevention, remediation and resolution of environmental problems, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. These threats will necessarily have an impact in the short or medium term on ecosystem services, understood as the multiple benefits that the ecosystem provides to society.
d- The elaboration of tools and proposals for the direct application of sustainable management, and advice to different levels of decision making, tending to achieve changes in social actors and at the executive, legislative and judicial levels.
e- The dissemination of knowledge and activities of the IIMyC to contribute to foster communication between society and science, and to build the basis for a sustainable relationship between society and the environment.
